Om, Lotus & Unalome — Acrylic Wall Art

Three motifs, cut as one slim figure. At the foot the line gathers into a spiral and opens into a run of wide crossing loops — the unalome, a motif with roots in Thai Buddhist yantra imagery. Above them two crescents cradle a small open lotus, and higher still the line curls into the form of Om and closes in a flame with three fine beads above it. The reading of the unalome as a picture of the path — the wandering, the doubling back, then something steadier — is a modern and widely shared one; we would rather describe the drawing honestly than speak for the traditions it belongs to.

The piece stands about two and a half times as tall as it is wide, which suits the wall a framed print never quite fits: beside a doorway, the strip at the end of a hallway, above a low bench or console, or two of them either side of a mirror. There is no backing panel — the cut line sits against the wall on its own. Gloss piano black keeps it graphic and quiet; mirror gold shifts as the room's light changes through the day; mirror chrome silver stays cooler and picks up whatever is opposite it. Float mounting holds the figure off the wall, so it carries a soft shadow behind it.

• Material: 3mm cast acrylic, cut on the CO2 laser in our own Dubai workshop.
