Calligraphic Roundel — Acrylic Islamic Wall Art

A roundel built from three nested arcs that sweep around one another like rings drawn in a single pass, each one thinning as it turns. At the centre sits one calligraphic flourish: a tall ascender that falls from the top of the circle, opens into a closed almond-shaped eye, then releases into a thick tail that curls back along the bottom. The piece is cut as one continuous outline, so the open space between the rings does as much of the drawing as the acrylic does. Overall it reads as a true circle — 100 cm across stands about 102 cm tall.

A circle is the easiest shape to hang on its own, and this one holds a wall without needing a pair. It works above a console in an entryway, centred over a bed, or on the chimney breast in a majlis where a rectangle never quite sits right. At 50 cm it suits a hallway or a reading corner; at 100 cm it becomes the one thing in the room. Gloss piano black reads as a flat graphic silhouette against a pale wall. Mirror gold warms under lamplight and catches the room behind it. Mirror chrome silver stays cooler and quieter, closer to brushed steel.

• Material: 3mm cast acrylic, cut on the CO2 laser in our own Dubai workshop.
