Allah & Muhammad Medallions — Acrylic Islamic Wall Art

Two matching medallions, cut as a pair. Each one is a rosette of Ottoman floral arabesque — split palmettes, rumi scrollwork and a lattice of interlaced stems — opening at the centre into a small pentagonal cartouche. The cartouche on the right holds the name Allah; the one on the left holds the name Muhammad, both drawn in Thuluth with the long verticals carried up into the frame. They are hung in the traditional order, Allah to the right and Muhammad to the left, the way the pair is set on either side of the mihrab in an Ottoman mosque.

The piece is wide rather than tall, so it sits well above a majlis sofa, a console in the entrance hall, or a prayer corner. At 120 cm across it stands about 63 cm high; leave roughly a hand's width between the two roundels and they read as one composition. In gloss piano black the openwork becomes clean silhouette and the wall behind it joins the drawing. Mirror gold warms the arabesque and picks up lamplight in the evening. Mirror chrome silver is the quietest of the three, cool against grey or stone-coloured walls.
