Where to Buy Islamic Wall Art in Dubai (and What to Check First)

There is no shortage of Islamic wall art in Dubai. There is a shortage of ways to tell the pieces apart, because the same handful of imported designs is sold by a great many people at a great many prices. This is a guide to working out what you are actually buying.

The four places people buy

Home-decor chains and malls

Convenient, you can see it before you buy, and returns are straightforward. The catch is range: a mall buys a season's worth of a few designs, so your piece will be in a hundred other living rooms, and sizes are fixed at whatever was ordered. Expect printed canvas or MDF more often than cut acrylic or metal.

Online marketplaces

The widest selection and the fastest delivery, and genuinely good for a small piece where the stakes are low. Two things to watch. First, many listings are drop-shipped from abroad, so “Dubai” in the listing means the warehouse, not the maker. Second, photographs are frequently renders rather than the actual product — if every image is a perfect studio shot with no real room in sight, be careful.

Instagram sellers

Often the best design taste, and usually willing to customise. The risk is operational rather than aesthetic: lead times slip, and if something arrives damaged your recourse is a DM. Ask for a tracked order and a written lead time before paying.

Workshops that cut their own

Fewer of these than you would think. The advantage is specific: when you ask for 70 cm instead of 60, or a different finish, there is a machine and a sheet of material in the room to do it with. The trade-off is that nothing is in stock — everything is cut to order, so you wait a few days.

What the price bands mean in Dubai

  • Under AED 150 — printed canvas, thin MDF, or small acrylic. Fine for a hallway or a child's room. Do not expect it to still look right in three years on a sunny wall.
  • AED 150–400 — the bulk of the market. Mid-size cut acrylic or pressed metal, usually 40–60 cm. This is where most living-room pieces sit, and where quality varies the most.
  • AED 400–900 — large single pieces, multi-panel sets, and anything cut to order. A 80 cm ornate roundel or a three-panel Surah set lands here.
  • Above AED 900 — bespoke, oversized, or genuinely hand-finished work. Worth it for a feature wall; not necessary for most rooms.

Five questions that tell you who you are dealing with

  1. “Can you make this 70 cm?” A maker says yes and quotes. A reseller explains that only the listed sizes are available.
  2. “Is it cast or extruded acrylic?” Cast is UV stable and will not yellow. Extruded is cheaper and does. Someone who does not know the difference is selling what they were shipped.
  3. “Was the calligraphy drawn or set in a font?” Both exist and both have a market, but the price should reflect it. If you read Arabic, you can usually tell: in a font the harakat sit mechanically and the same letter joins repeat identically across the piece.
  4. “What fixings come in the box?” If the answer is none, add a trip to the hardware shop to the price.
  5. “What happens if it arrives damaged?” A maker remakes it. A drop-shipper asks you to return it to a warehouse abroad.

Practical things specific to Dubai

Your walls are probably plasterboard. Most apartments built in the last fifteen years are, and that is good news: cast acrylic is light enough — a few hundred grams at 60 cm — to hang on adhesive pads with no drilling at all. If you are renting, this matters. Steel and solid wood at the same size need anchors.

Mind the sun. Dubai apartments are glazed generously. Cast acrylic is UV stable and will not yellow, but mirror finishes are happiest on an inside wall or one that catches morning rather than full afternoon light.

Buy before the rush. Anyone cutting to order has a queue in the two weeks before Ramadan and again before Eid. If you want something for a specific date, order three weeks out and ask for the lead time in writing.

And for the record

We are one of the workshops. Everything we sell is drawn and laser-cut from 3 mm cast acrylic in our own Dubai workshop, in gloss piano black, mirror gold and mirror silver, with other colours, thicknesses and sizes made to order. Delivery from AED 30 across all seven emirates, cash on delivery available, fixings in the box.
